I have a well-rounded background in tax accounting, management, technical writing, educational publishing, and teaching. With a BS in Accountancy and an MS in Taxation, my career has spanned an assortment of reputable companies across a variety of industries. I was a tax consultant at Arthur Andersen and a product manager at Amazon. I authored and edited mathematical texts at Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley, and I was a technical content writer at CCH, a provider of information services for lawyers and accountants. I was also adjunct faculty in the academic world, teaching accounting and tax courses to both business and non-business students.
My background has provided a diverse set of experiences and skills. Having worked for two of the largest accounting firms, I have gained a strong understanding of tax research, compliance, and planning issues. With experience developing federal and state tax explanatory material and technical practice aids for accountants and lawyers, I have exercised my spreadsheet, modeling, analytical, and technical writing skills. My years in the tech industry have shown me the excitement and challenges of being at the forefront of ideation and innovation. My time in editing and educational publishing has sharpened my eye-for-detail and my appreciation for clean writing. As an accounting instructor, I have stressed the importance of personal responsibility to my students. Finally, having owned and operated my own accounting practice, I realize the direct correlation between hard work and the rewards of a job well done.
One notable element has enabled me to thrive in all my endeavors – a toolbox containing effective communication, deep critical-thinking, creative problem-solving, quantitative & qualitative analysis, relationship-building, and ethics-focused skills. While strong conceptual knowledge of a specialized arena is important, effective communication is invaluable at enabling individuals to thrive rather than merely survive. Sharp communication skills have been critical in enabling me to flourish in my pursuits, covering the full gamut from my career to my interpersonal interactions.
In 2012, I veered from the trajectory of a traditional lifestyle so I could pursue my personal passions of travel, bicycle touring, and writing. Though my career has taken an unconventional path, well-honed communication skills have been the bedrock enabling success in all my endeavors. During my extensive wanderings both domestic and international, I work independently as a digital nomad on a variety of writing and editing freelance projects. As a business communication and interview coach, I enjoy helping others flourish.
